Microanalytical Laboratory

The Microanalysis lab provides two types of services: elemental analysis and thermal analysis.  NOTE:  For details on all procedures please see sections on each instrument.  The elements selected by the user determine which instruments the lab uses.

Elemental Analysis

There are three instruments the lab uses for elemental analysis:

1. CHN   (for measuring carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen in compounds)
2. ICP  (for measuring all metallic elements)

Thermal Analysis

There are two instruments the lab uses for physical analysis:

1. TGA (for determination of decomposition weight loss, combustion analysis, temperature stability, moisture content, reaction mechanism)
2. DSC (for determination of melting point, freezing point, glass transition, physical transitions, heat capacity, reaction mechanism, kinetics, purity, product identification)

Cost

The lab strives to have the lowest cost for analysis each year. Rates will vary somewhat depending upon operating expense.  Please call if you need accurate cost estimation. The cost for analysis is broken into four categories - University of Illinois SCS, University of Illinois Non-SCS, Other academic institutions, and Industry.
