The Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois

Instructions for Preparation of a Bachelor's Thesis (Chemistry 499)

  1. A thesis subject/topic should be selected by the student and the advisor of the department in which it is written.
  2. The credit assigned to theses differs among the departments.
  3. The thesis should be completed and submitted to the Head of the Department of Chemistry on or before the last day of instruction. The instructor in charge may require it earlier as he/she deems necessary. Requests for time extensions should be submitted by the instructor to the Head of the Department of Chemistry prior to the deadline.
  4. The thesis must be typed on paper of standard size (8-1/2 x 11 inches). Instead of inserting folded sheets, it is preferable to reduce the size of the drawing or photograph the drawing to the size of the standard thesis page and insert the Xerox copy.
  5. The thesis must be typed, preferably on a computer, and easily readable. If it is done on a typewriter, be sure the ribbon is a good one (light print becomes very dark when it is microfilmed and, there, difficult to read). Please also use a good quality paper for copying the thesis. NOTE: If you do not have access to a computer or are not competent at typing, it might be best if you hire a typist.
  6. The pages should be numbered at the center of the top or bottom of each page or at the upper right-hand at the beginning of the margin. For all other questions concerning format, particularly the form to be employed for footnotes, table of contents, or bibliography, see your instructor or a format guide.
  7. Each thesis MUST have a Table of Contents and a Bibliography.
  8. A CERTIFICATION SHEET (red bordered form), signed by the instructor in charge and by the head of the department must be inserted. Forms for this purpose can be obtained in the College office at 270 Lincoln Hall.
  9. THE THESIS MUST BE PRESENTED UNBOUND IN A MANILA ENVELOPE, A COPY OF THE TITLE PAGE (illustration below) MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE FRONT OF THE ENVELOPE.
  10. Although photocopies may be made, THE ORIGINAL OF THE FINAL DRAFT MUST BE FILED IN THE COLLEGE OFFICE, 270 LINCOLN HALL.
  11. The Title Page must be arranged in accordance with the models shown below. (For the precise degree to be awarded, student should consult the Undergraduate Programs Catalog or the College office.)
