In Memoriam: Lenore Hey Matheson

DEL MAR, Calif. – Lenore Hey Matheson, 93, of Del Mar, formerly of Dixon, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at her home. She had been a resident of Del Mar since 1961. She taught high school in Georgia; did extension teaching at Oglethorpe University; taught in Illinois and Washington; and finally in the San Dieguito School District in San Diego County, Calif., prior to her retirement.

Mrs. Matheson was born May 6, 1918, in Polo, the daughter of Henry and Mabelle (Anderson) Hey. She married Arthur Matheson in 1941, and they enjoyed 52 years together. Arthur preceded her in death in 1993. Lenore was baptized at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Polo, and grew up on Hill Den Farm in Dixon. She received her bachelor’s degree in 1940 and her master’s degree in 1948, both from the University of Illinois. She was a charter member of the Salk Women’s Organization, and a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, the American Association of University Women, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Lenore is survived by her four children, Mabelle Matheson, Lance Matheson, Lael Donaldson and Mark Matheson, and considers them to be her greatest accomplishment. She also is survived by her sister, Helen Rodgers; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
