Wimer, David 86, of Winthrop Harbor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born July 20, 1926 in Champaign, Illinois to David Cleveland and Lillian McGee Wimer. He attended school in Urbana, IL and graduated from Urbana High School in 1944. He served in the United States Army Infantry and Transportation Corps from 1944-1946. Upon his completion of military service, he attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 1951 with a degree in chemistry. He was employed as an Analytical Research Chemist with Abbott Laboratories from 1951-1987. Mr. Wimer served on the Winthrop Harbor Planning Commission from 1968-1971 and was also a Winthrop Harbor Village Trustee from 1971-1981. He was a member of the Abbott North Shore Retiree Men's Club, and served as Chairman from 1996-2000. In addition, he belonged to several honorary scientific organizations: American Men of Science, Sigma Xi, and the Illinois State Academy of Science. He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana, IL and also attended Christ Community Church in Zion. David is survived by his daughter, Beth (Brian) McLain of Winthrop Harbor; his beloved granddaughters, Katie and Sarah; and his special feline friends, Lovebug, Louie and Baby Doll. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Gwen, in 2008, and many dear friends and relatives.
