In 2020, the U.S. was in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic without any vaccines in sight. Millions of college students were left wondering when they’d be able to resume in-person instruction. Researchers from various disciplines across the University of Illinois campus decided to create a fast and inexpensive COVID-19 test in order to ensure that its students, faculty and staff could remain safe and healthy during the pandemic. That journey and the events of the 2020-21 school year are detailed in this 30-min Big Ten Network documentary.

Alumni Lecture: Dr. Lance E. Rodewald, MD (BS, ’76) (April 19, 2023), Dr. Lance E. Rodewald, MD (BS, ’76) gave a virtual talk entitled “Prevention and Control of Vaccine Preventable Diseases in China, from Polio to COVID-19” on April 19, 2023. Dr. Rodewald is a pediatrician and serves as the senior advisor to the National Immunization Program of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He received the 2023 Alumni Humanitarian Award from the College of LAS for his dedication to improving children’s access to life-saving vaccines.
