The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) recently announced the first 25 selections for their 100 Years of LAS Gallery of Excellence (http://www.las.illinois.edu/100/excellence/). Among the first 25 announced, three were affiliated with the Department of Chemistry: St. Elmo Brady (1884-1966), the first African-American to receive a Chemistry PhD in the United States; Herbert S. Gutowsky (1919-2000), a pioneer in NMR research; and Carl "Speed" Marvel (1894-1988), who is known as the father of synthetic polymer chemistry.

According to LAS, "this virtual gallery highlights some of the most prominent people and events throughout LAS history, which dates back to 1913. The faculty, alumni and events listed in the Gallery of Excellence have been selected by a college faculty committee after a call for nominations within LAS.

These are truly accomplished and inspirational honorees and reflect the profound impact that the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has had on our campus, our state, our nation and the world over the last century."
