Donald Vidican M.D., 60, of Rockford passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer. Born May 4, 1952, in Geneva, N.Y., and the son of Edward and Cecilia (Jiral) Videcan. Don married Deborah Calabrese on June 20, 1980, in Columbia, Mo. He was an avid University of Illinois sports fan with his loyal friend, Jim.
Dr. Vidican, a Joliet native, graduated from Joliet Catholic High School and received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry with the bronze tablet award from the University of Illinois, Champaign. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Vidican received his gastroenterology fellowship training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
In 1982, he joined Rockford Gastroenterology Associates and served as a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford and director of the OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center's Digestive Disease Unit. He served both as past president of the medical section and staff president of OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. For the past 30 years, Dr. Vidican dedicated himself to the practice of medicine and was recognized by his patients as exceptionally kind and selfless. To his peers and associates, he was a trusted mentor and friend.
Survived by wife, Debbie; children, Daniel and Lisa; mother, Cecilia; sisters, Cathy (David) Kapinus and Kim (Keith) Ogle; father-in-law, Carmelo Calabrese; mother-in-law, Patricia Calabrese; brother-in-law, Denis (Toby) Calabrese; nieces and nephews, Eric Kapinus, Kelly and Kristen Ogle, Drew and Grace Calabrese; and special pets, irascible Bear and sweet Callie.
