Announcements
1. My name is Tom Hummel (tjhummel) and I am the course director of Chem 104 this summer. I lecture at 1 pm Monday - Thursday in 1024 Noyes Lab. At noon Monday-Thursday, you have discussion section. The TA for the discussion section is Ethan Ramirez (eramir63) and the room for discussion section is 2012 Chem Annex.
2. For our first class at noon on Monday, let's meet in 1024 Chem Annex instead of 2012 CA. Tom Hummel will talk about course policy at noon, then get into lecture material on a review of chemical equilibrium. After Monday, the noon discussion class will be in 2012 CA.
3. In general, you will take two quizzes per week, except for weeks with exams or with holidays. All quizzes will be taken during the noon discussion section. Some of the assigned text homework problems will be collected on quiz days. The first quiz will be June 18 and will cover the Monday and Tuesday assignments of week 1. The even numbered assigned textbook problems for the Monday and Tuesday week 1 assignments will be checked during the quiz. Work on the assigned Review questions will not be checked. Quiz 2 will be Tuesday, June 24 and will cover the Wednesday week 1 and Monday week 2 assignments. Text homework from these two assignments will be checked.
4. The required text for the course is the 3rd ed Chemistry: An Atoms First Approach by Zumdahl, Zumdahl, and Decoste. I recommend you purchase the electronic version of the text, since it is cheapest. Where you purchase the materials is up to you.
In general, the best price for the etext comes from the publisher, Cengage. To make your purchase of the required etext from Cengage, go to Cengage.com and use the ISBN for the text to search for it. The ISBN for the 3rd ed Atoms First text is ISBN-9780357363454.
5. We will not use OWL this summer. All homework in the course is assigned from the text. We will also not use Canvas for our summer course. The only online source is this website.
6. If you are new to the course, please read the Course Policy handout (link on the right). There is also a link to the assignments on the right. To catch-up, do the assigned reading and text homework problems for the classes you missed. In general, if you can do and understand the assigned text homework problems, then you are in good shape.
