Frederick Daniels Thayer III, 74, passed away in comfort and peace on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 after a brief and rapid battle with cancer. Frederick (Fred) was born April 23, 1939 in Stamford, Connecticut, to Jean Elizabeth (Dearness) Thayer, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio and Frederick Daniels Thayer Jr., formerly of Dudley, Massachusetts. Fred was raised in Darien, Connecticut and Lynchburg, Virginia.
He was an honors graduate of E.C. Glass High School, class of 1957 (Lynchburg) and a graduate of the University of Illinois (Champaign/Urbana) in 1962 and 1964, with a BA in Chemistry and a MA in Russian, respectively. Fred had a lifelong passion for linguistics. He retired earlier this year from Chemical Absracts Service, in Columbus, Ohio, where he worked for 43 years. He was a skilled translator of foreign languages, including Russian and other European languages, Chinese, Japanese and many others. In addition, he was an accomplished pianist, and avidly interested in history, art and mathematics. Fred loved music, travelling and spending quality time with his family.
