Online education, especially in massive open online courses (MOOCs), has been growing expontentially over the last few years. Chemistry at Illinois, which has been at the forefront of chemical education since the days of Professor Stan Smith, has been incorporating these ideas and adapting to maintain the cutting-edge education we are known for.

Chemistry Graduate Student Mike Evans, along with his advisor Professor Jeff Moore, were recently mentioned in a Nature article on the subject. Mike Evans comments in the article, “Online students are different from students on campus,” he said, discussing, how he designed and taught an organic-chemistry course with Professor Moore on Coursera. “Online students are older and they’re looking for real-world applications for what they’re learning.”
