Taras Pogorelov Named 2014 NCSA Fellow

Date
07/31/14

Taras Pogorelov, Senior Research Scientist in the School of Chemical Sciences and Research Professor in the Chemistry Department, has been named as one of nine NCSA Faculty Fellows for 2014. The fellowships provide research support that enable collaborative projects with the researchers and computer technology experts at NCSA. Prof. Pogorelov will be working with Mike Hallock of SCS and Victor Anisimov of NCSA on his project "An Open Environment for Automation of Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Membrane-Active Host Defense Peptides," whose goal is to develop an interface for the software package Computational Discovery Desktop that will enable users to more easily carry out molecular dynamics computations and connect them with macroscopic phenomena.

Prof. Pogorelov's research interests are in the application and development of computational methods for modeling membrane structure and membrane-protein interactions by molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, and molecular evolution. He received a Diploma in Biomedical Engineering from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 1995, an M.S. in Mathematics in 1996, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics in 2006, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
