NMR pioneer Charlie Slichter has passed away

Date
02/22/18

Slichter passed away on Monday, February 19th in Boulder, Colorado, surrounded by his family.

Martin Gruebele said "Charlie Slichter was a highly valued colleague not only in the Physics Department, but also in Chemistry. He collaborated with Illinois chemistry professor Herb Gutowsky in the 1950s, laying the foundation for chemical applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Herb's and Charlie's famous and highly cited paper on the first observation of the spin-spin coupling  paved the way for measuring the structure of molecules using NMR. We just celebrated the paper during the dedication of the new Chemistry Annex Building in October of 2017, and we were very lucky that Charlie and Anne Slichter were able to attend."
