We are deeply saddened to share that alumnus and long-time Illinois Chemistry supporter Robert C. Springborn (BS, ’51) passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in Naples, Florida.
Bob and Connie Springborn have been generous supporters and close friends of the department for several years. The Springborn Endowment for Student Support funds the department’s most prestigious fellowship, which has been awarded to more than 20 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows since its establishment in 2007.
Professor Steve Zimmerman, who was department head when the Springborns made their gift, called Bob “a great man with whom I was honored to work,” stating: “he has impacted his Alma Mater immeasurably.”
Dr. Springborn shared that he gave for two reasons: “I value the education I received, and I want to ensure our country can compete scientifically in the future; Illinois is the best place to invest to achieve both goals. I owe my success to my education."
The department gratefully acknowledges Dr. and Mrs. Springborn’s legacy of generosity.
