Alumnus Milan Mrksich named Northwestern's interim vice president for research

A nationally-known, award-winning scientist and an alumnus of the Department of Chemistry at Illinois, Milan Mrksich (BS, '88) is now Northwestern University's interim vice president for research.

A senior researcher with appointments in biomedical engineering, chemistry and cell and developmental biology, Mrksich took over the interim position in October 2019. He's also founding director of the Center for Synthetic Biology, a leader in developing surface chemistries for a range of applications in the life sciences and serves on the senior staff of Northwestern University's president, Morton Schapiro.
