A sophomore chemistry major is one of three University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students who are among the 413 students nationwide awarded Goldwater scholarships for the 2023-24 academic year.
Aidan Lindsay is an undergraduate researcher in the lab of chemistry professor Prashant Jain, where he has worked on the light-driven electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia using molybdenum oxide nanosheets as the catalyst.
Lindsay’s career goals are to obtain his PhD in theoretical and computational chemistry, conduct research on nanoscale light-matter interactions for renewable energy applications, and teach at the university level.
Awards were announced March 31 by the Goldwater Foundation, which has been awarding the preeminent scholarships since 1989 to college sophomores and juniors across the United States. Honoring Senator Barry Goldwater, the scholarship program is designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
The other UIUC Goldwater scholars are Daniel Cudzich in materials research and engineering and Maxwell Fan in mathematical sciences.
