Qian Chen, Professor and Racheff Faculty Scholar in Materials Science & Engineering, and Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded the Langmuir Lectureship of the American Chemical Society.

The award is among the highest honors of the ACS Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry and is awarded annually to two leading researchers in the interdisciplinary field of colloid and surface chemistry to recognize their exceptional research.

Chen received the award in honor of groundbreaking work in transforming electron microscopy to understand the manufacturing, interactions, and self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles, and to provide new insights for applications. Chen has been invited by the ACS to deliver her Langmuir Lecture at the ACS Fall Meeting in Washington DC (August 16-21) during the awards session.

She joined the faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2015. Chen received her B.S. in Chemistry from Peking University, China (2007), and her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from UIUC with Prof. Steve Granick (2012). Her doctoral research focused on developing new “bottom-up” strategies for materials construction.
