The Springborn Endowment for Student Support was created in 2006 and welcomed its first set of graduate fellows in 2007. The program, generously funded by Dr. Robert C. and Mrs. Carolyn J. Springborn, was created to recruit and retain the best and brightest graduate students in the field of Chemistry.

Criteria for selection

Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Springborn Graduate Fellows are expected to have a documented academic record of excellence and demonstrated creativity and leadership potential.

Application process

Students who apply and are accepted to the Chemistry graduate program at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign are automatically included in the pool of students under consideration to receive a Springborn Fellowship.

Graduate Admissions

Applications for the Fall semester will be available in August, and the application deadline is December 1st. We do not accept applications for spring semester admission.

Selection process

Selection is a two-step process:

  • Applicants must first be accepted to the Graduate Program for PhD students.
  • Applicants must then be interviewed by the admissions committee. All reasonable expenses associated with this visit will be paid. Typically this interview is performed during a standard prospective PhD student visiting weekend.
  • Applicants not selected for Springborn Fellowships may be eligible for other fellowships.

All applications, including for those interested in the Springborn Fellowship, must be submitted by the deadline advertised on the Chemistry Graduate Admissions page.
